The studio gathered dust for two years while I tried to determine an activity that could replace music composition. I jumped out of planes, cooked a bit, played in jazz bands, drove around in the desert, moped, threw myself into my work, etc. At the end of that time my head was so stuffed with musical jetsam that I had to flush it, hence Bathtub Curve and another CD, Beauty (not yet released). Eight months was then spent removing expectations about the release of this CD, a task vital to my future health.

A few years ago, I developed a group of patches on the Roland D-550 synthesizer. Each patch would produce musical sound which would vary considerably over a range of pitches, dynamics and durations. These were used to make an ambient sound installation that could be played endlessly by any moron (a computer being the target candidate) and still achieve musical results. I named the resulting compositions “Moronscapes.”

During my compositional hiatus, I developed a series of simple musical constructions that I wanted to use as the framework for a group of compositions. I used the moronscape patches because they were friendly, familiar and available at the moment of need.
